Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.) is once again preparing for our annual school supply drive for the children of farm workers!
COVID-19 has impacted lives all over the world, and farm workers are some of those who have been hit the hardest. The lack of living wages requires farm workers to live in crowded conditions and to travel together in cars, vans, or using public transportation, making it impossible for them to social distance at home or at work.
Now more than ever, we need to support farm workers and give back to those who put food on our plates.
The farm workers who pick our food are victims of an unjust system that prioritizes corporations over workers, profit over people, and greed over families. These workers strive to get by on very little income, and parents and grandparents often cannot afford to buy their children and grandchildren the school supplies they need. Parents sacrifice so much for their children to have a better life, knowing an education is one avenue to achieve this. Our ability to get school supplies in their children’s hands means that they have the potential for a better future.
While F.E.P. works in other ways to challenge this system, we want to do our best to give farm workers the support they deserve.
We are adapting this year’s school supply drive to the realities of a world under COVID-19. Please keep reading for more details.
This year the school supplies will be given to the children of Indigenous farm workers in Sonoma County through Movimiento Cultural de la Unión Indigena and the farm workers in the Central Valley through Lizbeth Valdez.
We have 540 children in need with more than 300 of them being elementary school students.
Not wanting to contribute to the spread of COVID-19, we have decided to order prepackaged kits that include the school supplies that will only need to be inserted into the backpacks.
We need your help to buy these kits, and we also need 540 backpacks! (see details on where to ship them below) Order backpacks and have them sent to us OR donate so we can order them.
Ship new backpacks directly to our office now through Friday, August 14:
