(English) Shell Shock: The Cruelty Inside Exotic Eggs

(English) First, let’s be clear: There is cruelty inside every animal-based egg produced for consumption. Eggs are among the world’s most ubiquitous foods, but while eggs from chickens may be the type many of us imagine when we think of eggs, there are scores of other types that humans consume—and not all are from birds. Here, then, is an exploration of some of the most popular “exotic” or “specialty” eggs, along with some uncommon ones. (For the purposes of this page, we will not address eggs that are consumed solely for survival.)

A Reflection on My Veganism This AANHPI Month

(English) Despite my efforts to curate a happy, positive vegan bubble, I have not been able to escape the massive increase in content promoting dairy that seems to have taken over social media over the past few years. Perhaps it was there all along and only recently felt emboldened to come out of the woodwork. The faces behind this content are primarily white millennials who tout and praise trends that fit into the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) worldview such as raw cow’s milk, the use of “beef” tallow in everything, avoiding seed oils, and even following a carnivore diet. Sometimes subtle and sometimes glaringly obvious, this content has seeped into social media and society.

(English) Our latest page tackles the issues surrounding consuming insects, worms and other things they make. Now being raised and killed by the trillions for consumption, insects are subjected to many of the same cruelties as chickens, pigs, cows, and other farmed animals, such as cramped housing, poor nutrition, and inhumane slaughter methods, including being frozen, baked, boiled, microwaved, or mechanically shredded—all while still alive.

How Being Born Blind Helped Me See the World—and Veganism—Differently

(English) Happy International Youth Day! Youth around the globe are leading monumental movements. Many have spotted an issue and are powerfully organizing to ensure that the problem does not continue to oppress the next generation. Every day, youth take selfless steps forward, while many world leaders, corporations, and antiquated social practices attempt to drag them and their progress back. Yet, still, youth rise.

How Being Born Blind Helped Me See the World—and Veganism—Differently

(English) When I became vegan five years ago, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and choices that I faced. Social media had filled my head with ideas about what being vegan “should” look like and what products I needed to buy. I was determined to stick with my commitment to be vegan, even if I didn’t have it all figured out. Along the way, I ended up finding affirmation of my choice in an unexpected place.

A Reflection on My Veganism This AANHPI Month

(English) One hundred and twenty years ago, The Jungle was published. This book would have a profound impact on food safety, but it didn’t have the intent the author, Upton Sinclair, had hoped for. He is quoted as saying, "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
