1 can (14 oz) chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
¼ – ⅓ cup vegan mayonnaise (based on your preference)
Salt and pepper to taste
Dash of cayenne pepper
Bread of your choice

*Optional ingredients: celery, red onion, kelp, crushed nori sheets or dulse, sweet or dill pickle relish.


  1. Rinse and drain the chickpeas and place in a medium-size bowl. Roughly mash the chickpeas with the back of a fork or potato masher until desired consistency.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well, adding any extra ingredients* you like.
  3. Serve on bread with desired toppings.

Note: This can also be served with chips, as lettuce wraps, or on tostada shells. The possibilities are endless with this recipe. Also, be sure to save that aquafaba (liquid from the garbanzo beans) for other recipes!
