Food Empowerment Project Commemorates Lao New Year With The Launch of Vegan Lao Food Booklets
Vegan Lao Booklets are now available through our website foodispower.org
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (April 10, 2023) — Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.), a vegan food justice organization, is pleased to announce its new Vegan Lao Food booklet to commemorate the Lao New Year (4/14–4/16). The 52-page booklet features several veganized Lao recipes, including salads, entrees, soups, sauces, and desserts. We demonstrate how nostalgic Lao dishes like Khua Seen, Khao Poon, and Laab can still be enjoyed without animal ingredients.
Indulge in bright dishes like Thum Mak Hoong, a popular Lao dish prepared with a flavor-filled combination of papaya, eggplant, and carrots accompanied with shredded cabbage and topped with lime juice. For a sweet craving, the vegan recipe booklet features Khao Tom Mud—a fruity delicacy containing baby banana and sweet sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. Vegan Lao Food provides cooking inspiration for all vegans, non-vegans, and veg-curious foodies alike.
This launch celebrates the resilience of Khon Lao (Lao people) and acknowledges the devastation their country has faced due to U.S. involvement. The Secret War severely impacted Laos. From 1964 to 1973, the U.S. dropped more than 270 million cluster bombs on the country, and many remain undetonated today.
The booklet is more than a recipe guide—it’s also a tool to help us understand the power of our food choices. Readers can learn more about ethical veganism, U.S. farm workers and slavery, how to eat on a budget, colonization in our diet, and much more.
To order a booklet, please visit VeganLaoBooklets.com. View the recipes in English and Lao. Don’t forget to check out our other recipe booklets—you can find them on VeganMexicanFood.com and VeganFilipinoFood.com!
About Food Empowerment Project
Food Empowerment Project (http://www.foodispower.org), founded in 2007, seeks to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one’s food choices. In all of its work, Food Empowerment Project seeks specifically to empower those with the fewest resources. Its advocacy areas include fair conditions for farm workers; the availability of healthy foods in Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities; and the protection of animals. A vegan food justice organization, Food Empowerment Project also works to expose negligent corporations, such as those that push unhealthy foods into low-income areas, those that perpetuate food deserts (or food apartheid areas), and those that sell chocolate derived from the worst forms of child labor. Food Empowerment Project is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
