afternoon.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2>Factory Farm Pollution<\/h2><p>In today&#8217;s world there are a host of serious environmental problems, and factory farming is one of the top causes of pollution.<sup>[1]<\/sup>\u00a0Scientific research has found that factory farming\u2019s method of crowding and confining animals in warehouse-like conditions before killing them and mass-producing both \u201cmeat\u201d from\u00a0<a title=\"Cows Raised for \u201cMeat\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/cows-raised-for-meat\/\">cows<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Pigs\" href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/pigs\/\">pigs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Chickens Raised for \u201cMeat\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/chickens-raised-for-meat\/\">chickens<\/a>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<a title=\"Cows Raised for \u201cMilk\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/cows-raised-for-milk\/\">dairy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Hens Raised for Eggs\" href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/hens-raised-for-eggs\/\">eggs<\/a>\u00a0poses \u201can unacceptable level of risk to public health and damage to the environment&#8230;\u201d<sup>[2]<\/sup>\u00a0Yet, despite factory farming\u2019s severe social and ecological costs, many governments promote this unsustainable industry to supply a growing global \u201cmeat\u201d market that is projected to double by 2050.<sup>[3]<\/sup><\/p><h2>Factory Farm Pollutants<\/h2><p>In general, there are two primary sources of factory farm pollution:<\/p><h3><em>Waste from Animal Farms\u00a0<\/em><\/h3><p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/NorthCarolina-manure-lagoon-300x214.jpg\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35795 lazyload\" https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/NorthCarolina-manure-lagoon-500x357.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><\/noscript><\/noscript><\/p><p>Factory farms typically concentrate tens or hundreds of thousands of animals in one area, and a large operation can produce as much excrement as a small city.<sup>[4]<\/sup> According to the EPA, \u201cA single dairy cow produces about 120 pounds of wet manure per day, which is equivalent to the waste produced by 20\u201340 people.\u00bb<sup>[5]<\/sup> Using EPA statistics, that means California\u2019s 1.8 million dairy cows produce as much waste as 36\u201372 million people.\u00a0So, when taking into consideration tens or hundreds of thousands of animals, it&#8217;s not surprising that this amounts to about 130 times more excrement than is produced by the entire human population every year.<sup>[6]<\/sup>\u00a0For centuries, farmers have used animal manure to fertilize their fields, but factory farms produce far more waste than the land can absorb,<sup>[7]<\/sup>\u00a0turning disposal of this toxic by-product into a big problem for both the agriculture industry and society.<\/p><p>Unlike human waste, animal excrement from factory farms is not processed as sewage, making it about 500 times more concentrated than treated human waste<sup>[8]<\/sup>\u00a0while leaving pathogens and volatile chemicals intact.<sup>[9]\u00a0<\/sup>Even so, farmers typically spray some liquidized manure onto the food being grown for animals using giant sprinkler jets, and store the rest in open-air cesspools that can be as large as several football fields<sup>[10]<\/sup>\u00a0and hold millions of gallons of waste.<sup>[11]<\/sup>\u00a0However, neither of these dispersal techniques is environmentally safe or sustainable.<\/p><h3><em>Agricultural Chemicals\u00a0<\/em><\/h3><p>Past research has shown that of all the agricultural chemicals applied in the U.S., about 37 percent were used to grow crops for animals raised for food.<sup>[12]\u00a0<\/sup>Agricultural chemicals (or agrichemicals) refer to the wide variety of chemical products used in agriculture, such as pesticides (including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides), as well as synthetic fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics. Farmers spray agricultural chemicals onto food grown for animals in order to kill bugs, rodents, weeds, and other organisms that would otherwise supplant or eat the grain grown for the animals. They also apply these substances directly to animals\u2019 skin, fur or feathers to combat insect infestation.<sup>[13]<\/sup><\/p><p>However, many of the agricultural chemicals approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contain ingredients that are known carcinogens,<sup>[14]<\/sup>\u00a0while others cause severe allergies, birth defects and various health problems.<sup>[15]<\/sup>\u00a0In addition, those who grow food for animals rely heavily on synthetic petroleum-based fertilizers,<sup>[16]<\/sup>\u00a0and animal waste itself contains residues from the massive doses of non-therapeutic antibiotics and artificial growth hormones that animals are routinely fed or injected with to prevent illness and accelerate weight gain.<sup>[17]<\/sup>\u00a0Ultimately, the dangerous compounds found in agrichemicals end up as pollutants when wind and rain disperse them into the environment.<\/p><h2>Environmental Impacts of Factory Farm Pollution<\/h2><p>Factory farms dump tens of millions of tons of animal waste and agricultural chemicals into the environment every year\u2014driving land, water and air pollution in the process:<\/p><h3><em>Land Pollution<\/em><\/h3><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-300x199.jpeg\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35796 alignright lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><noscript><img data-src=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-300x199.jpeg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-1024x679.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-768x509.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-500x331.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce.jpeg 1500w\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35796 alignright lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35796 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-1024x679.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-768x509.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce-500x331.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/foodispower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Crop-Dusting-Lettuce.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><\/noscript><\/noscript>Most food produced for animals is grown using a combination of untreated animal waste and synthetic fertilizers, both of which contain excessive amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals (such as zinc, copper, chromium, arsenic, cadmium, and lead).<sup>[18]<\/sup>\u00a0Even though most of these substances usually act as nutrients that nourish plants, industrial farmers overuse them to increase crop yields, and the remainder that cannot be absorbed into the earth\u2014especially when it is already saturated after heavy rains<sup>[19]<\/sup>\u00a0\u2014ends up polluting the soil, while degrading its water retention ability and fertility over time.<sup>[20]<\/sup><\/p><p>In addition, it&#8217;s been shown that U.S. farmers have actually used 750 million pounds of some 20,000 different agricultural chemicals in just one year,<sup>[21]<\/sup>\u00a0and those that have been used to kill insects and weeds that threaten crop yields end up poisoning natural ecosystems. Plus, as some weeds and bugs have developed resistance to these compounds over the years, chemists have continued to create ever more powerfully-toxic pesticides that are even worse for the environment.<\/p><p>The residues of these chemicals are found at every level of the food chain, and\u2014through the process of bioaccumulation\u2014become more concentrated the higher up the chain one looks. Meaning, in a system that runs the gamut from micro-organisms to humans, people who eat animal products get the highest dosage of toxins.<\/p><h3><em>Water Pollution<\/em><\/h3><p>The National Water Quality Inventory report of 2002 noted that agricultural runoff was \u00abthe leading cause of river and stream impairment and the second leading cause of impairment in lakes, ponds and reservoirs\u00bb<sup>[22]<\/sup>\u00a0which includes fertilizer runoff that typically occurs when rain carries fertilizer into waterways.\u00a0Runoff from both synthetic fertilizers and animal waste can poison drinking water and aquatic ecosystems, wreaking havoc on human health<sup>[23]<\/sup>\u00a0and wildlife.<sup>[24]<\/sup>\u00a0In the Southern U.S. , where there is an abundance of chicken factory farms, as many as one-third of all underground wells fall below EPA safe drinking water standards for nitrate, a form of nitrogen concentrated in chicken waste.<sup>[25]<\/sup><\/p><p>Excrement from animal waste cesspools can also seep through the soil into nearby groundwater and overflow during storms.<sup>[26]<\/sup>\u00a0In 1995, for example, an eight-acre pig-manure lagoon in North Carolina ruptured, spilling 22 million gallons of untreated waste into the New River, which killed millions of fish.<sup>[27]<\/sup> In California, the nation\u2019s top dairy-producing state, a UC Davis study found animal agriculture to be responsible for serious nitrate contamination in areas with big dairy operations, and the authors of the study determined that nitrate would remain in those areas for decades even if all farming operations were eliminated. <sup>[28]<\/sup> According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, as of 2007, animal excrement from factory farms had contaminated groundwater in 17 states and polluted 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 states.<sup>[29]<\/sup><\/p><p>Factory farm runoff also causes algal blooms that kill fish by depleting water of its oxygen, contributing to the formation of hundreds of \u201cdead zones\u201d worldwide where sea creatures cannot survive. The largest of these can be found in the Gulf of Mexico and is nearly the size of the State of New Jersey.<sup>[30]<\/sup><\/p><p><a title=\"Farmed Fish\" href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/farmed-fish\/\">Aquaculture<\/a>\u00a0(basically, the factory farming of fish in underwater enclosures) also makes a large contribution to water pollution, especially in the coastal mangrove swamps where these operations are typically located. Like land-based animal agriculture, intensive fish farming maximizes production efficiency by concentrating as many animals into the smallest amount of space possible\u2014and also creates tons of untreated fecal waste that pollutes and de-oxygenates aquatic habitats.<\/p><h3><em>Air Pollution<\/em><\/h3><p>Various gases from animal waste are all major sources of factory farm air pollution,<sup>[31]<\/sup>\u00a0and particulate matter and bacterial toxins found in high concentrations at and around industrialized animal facilities have caused serious respiratory<sup>[32]<\/sup>\u00a0and cardiac disorders.<sup>[33]<\/sup>\u00a0The ammonia from waste slurry lagoons also breeds bacteria, which creates acid that evaporates and combines with nitrous oxide from fertilizers and industrial pollution to form nitric acid rain\u2014which leaches nutrients from the soil, despoils forest habitats, and kills fish by releasing toxic minerals from the earth that flow into aquatic ecosystems. Even though agricultural fertilizer emissions are the leading cause of nitric acid rain (after motor vehicles and coal plants), they remain virtually unregulated in the U.S.<sup>[34]<\/sup><\/p><p>In addition, animal farming is known to be a significant contributor to the rising atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions fueling the climate crisis.<sup>[35,36]<\/sup> These climate-harming emissions are largely from enteric fermentation (processes that occur in the digestive tracts of animals such as cows and sheep), gasses released from manure, and land use change such as tropical deforestation, which is done to create pasture and clear land to grow food for animals. Globally, farming is the largest source of anthropogenic (human-made) methane emissions<sup>[37]<\/sup>, with animal farming being the dominant source of agricultural methane emissions.<sup>[38]<\/sup> As a climate change agent, methane gas is about 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period, and worse, 80 times stronger over a 20-year period due to the short amount of time it exists in the atmosphere after being emitted.<sup>[36.39]<\/sup> Other harmful greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are also produced from raising animals to kill for food.<sup>[40]<\/sup> Yet, despite animal farming being a leading role in the climate change crisis, the EPA has failed to enforce federal law to control these hazardous emissions.<sup>[37,41]<\/sup> Emissions from animal farming are expected to increase over time as demand for animal-sourced food grows, so reducing this demand and becoming vegan is an important step in addressing greenhouse gas pollution.<sup>[35,36]<\/sup><\/p><h2>How You Can Help<\/h2><p>Taking a stand against factory farming\u2019s ecological destructiveness by becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/veganism\/\">vegan <\/a>is not only better for your health, but also saves the lives of animals. You can take environmental eating a step further by supporting organic farmers who don\u2019t use agricultural chemicals and synthetic fertilizers.
