As a keystone predator, sharks play an integral role in maintaining the structure and stability of marine ecosystems throughout the world.\n\nMost species of sharks are \u00abcruisers,\u00bb meaning they continuously move through the water in search of prey. Their relatively lightweight skeleton is composed entirely of cartilage, allowing them to swim extremely fast while retaining unparalleled agility. In addition, their liver contains large amounts of oil, which ultimately increases their buoyancy.\n\nAnother main difference between sharks and bony fish is the manner in which they attain oxygen from the water. Bony fishes have a single pair of gills with a muscular covering that contracts to force oxygen-rich water over their gills. Sharks lack this muscular covering and therefore must continuously swim in order to uptake oxygen and keep from suffocating. That is why sharks have between 5 and 7 pairs of gills.\n\nSharks also possess a sensory organ that is fairly unique among fishes. A network of tiny canals known as Ampullae of Lorenzini are scattered across the front of their face. These sensitive indentations allow sharks to sense the slightest change in electrical current given off by the muscle contractions of their prey. In many cases, sharks sense this electrical fluctuation before seeing or smelling their prey. Known as \u00abshark finning,\u00bb fishermen catch large numbers of sharks, cut off their top and side fins then drop them back into the water. Unable to swim, the sharks sink to the ocean floor where they slowly suffocate. This fate is certain, as sharks need to swim in order to pass oxygen over their gills. The sharks may also be slowly eaten alive by scavengers or other predators.\n\nThe fins are considered a \u00abdelicacy\u00bb and are therefore extremely valuable on the open market. Historically reserved for Chinese emperors, shark fin soup is becoming increasingly common throughout the world, especially in Asia where it is viewed as a symbol of high status. As many as 73 million sharks die a slow painful death each year to supply this growing demand.\u00a0<sup>[2]<\/sup>\n\nSome sharks take as long as 15 years to reach sexual maturity and birth a very small number of offspring. Consequently, many of the species that are targeted for their fins are experiencing a sharp population decline. According to the most recent research by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 32% of the world&#8217;s open ocean shark species are currently threatened with extinction, largely due to the practice of shark finning.\u00a0<sup>[3]<\/sup>\n\nAlthough shark finning is illegal in many countries including the U.S., it is extremely difficult to enforce these laws. Every year, the world&#8217;s shark populations are further decimated by this cruel practice. Marine ecologists believe that some species may be on a fast-track towards extinction.
