The Remarkable Youth Contest Finalists
F.E.P. just concluded our first-ever Youth Scholarship Contest! For this contest, youth from across the country submitted writing and art pieces to convey the importance of worker justice in our food system and reasons why moving toward a vegan food system will create a positive change for all. First-place winners receive a $500 scholarship, and second-place winners receive a $300 scholarship.
Writing contest award-winning finalists are:
Junior Division
First place: Ava Cuevas, who wrote a powerful essay about workers in the food system. Read it here.
Second place: Amy Choi, whose essay “Corpse on Your Plate” examines how the meat industry and fast-food industry conceal the truth about human and animal exploitation from consumers. Read it here.
Young Adult Division
First place: Morgan Greenlaw, whose poem “These Legal Crimes” is a deeply moving elegy with a hip-hop rhythm about human and non-human victims of the food system. Read it here.
Second place: Addie Lentzner, who wrote an insightful and thought-provoking essay about child labor and slavery in the chocolate industry. Read it here.
Illustration contest award-winning finalists are:
Junior Division
First place: Jimin Lee, who designed an imaginative collage of text and illustration that communicates so much of what food justice stands for.
Second place: Jayde Boler, who created a dramatic illustration of a cow straddling two complementary worlds: an animal factory on one side and a city street filled with animal exploiters on the other.
Young Adult Division
First place: Madi Burt, whose striking illustration featured a powerful anti-dairy message.
Second place: Tabby Dimock, who designed a cartoon devil befriending a cow, chicken, and mouse with the message “Even demons care for animals.”
